WINE OF THE WEEK: Val de Salis Saint-Chinian 2015, Languedoc, France

£7.99, Lidl

Saint-Chinian

This hits the shelves today with 39 other wines in Lidl's Easter Collection and is a red to zone in on if you like the Mediterranean French style of spicy, plummy black fruit with an aromatic whiff of herby garrigue. While the Saint-Chinian area can produce reds with a distinctive stony, mineral character and reds that are bigger and more rugged, the low-priced Val de Salis treads a middle line with spicy, fruity charm, some smoky, toasted notes and delicate mineral freshness. It's a blend of Syrah, Carignan and Grenache, so has guts enough to take on garlicky chops, steaks, or braised lamb shanks, but won't overpower lighter dishes and would be perfectly at home with chorizo or a pizza. If you want a white wine tip for Lidl, try the floral, peachy, lightly mineral Roero Arneis, a fresh-faced Italian white from Piedmont (£8.99).
