WINE OF THE WEEK: Cantina La Vis Ritratti Pinot Grigio 2022, Trentino, Italy

£14.99, House of Townend

A bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio wine

If Italian Pinot Grigio is the sort of white wine you normally pass by on the grounds that it’s a faintly aromatic, thinnish, dryish apology of a wine, I know how you feel..

But stay with me because there’s another sort – Pinot Grigio with personality – and the 2022 Ritratti is one of its kind. It’s also been temptingly reduced in price by £3.49 to £14.99 because stocks are running low.

With an intriguing whiff of parsley-cum-mint mingling with the ripe apple and pear on the nose, the palate is fresh, rounded and softly textured with sweet orchard fruit carried by a mineral undercurrent and a flash of white peach on the finish.

It’s complete, satisfying and easy to drink, but not so easy that it slips down without you noticing or savouring it. And temptingly, the price has been cut by £3.49 to £14.99 because stocks are running low.

It hails from a long-established, well-regarded cooperative in Lavis, a town and subregion a few kilometres south of Trento where the vines are not given to producing the vast quantities that inevitably result in dilute flavours. The grapes are hand-picked and gently handled, with vinification in stainless steel and 6–8 months’ ageing on lees to enhance the texture.

It’s a failsafe aperitif but also pairs with mozzarella and avocado salads, creamy pasta dishes, including with ricotta, seafood pasta, quiches, simply cooked white fish and fish pies. 13%. Empty bottle weight: 593g.
