£8.50/£10, Morrisons
I had scheduled this Tuscan red for next week, but it's on offer at £8.50 until 2 November, so I've pulled it forward to allow more time for everyone to buy it at the lower price, although it's good value at the full (£10) price, should you miss out.
Morrisons wine buyers are understandably proud of the wine, which they make in collaboration with, I quote, "one of the oldest and most highly regarded wine estates in Tuscany". They're tight-lipped about who that is, but the winery is in Castelnuovo Berardenga, so we can speculate. I'm pretty sure it's... I'll tell you if we bump into each other.
More important is what it tastes like and what it goes with. The answer is that after ageing for 16 months in French oak barrels and large Slavonian oak casks it's dark and sultry with autumnal, earthy sweetness, flattering oak, flavours of tobacco, red cherries and chestnuts, polished tannins and a finishing Sangiovese tang.
And to eat: I had it with roast haunch of venison flavoured with juniper and rosemary, the pan juices deglazed with port and redcurrant jelly, but it would be very happy with other roasts, including the Christmas or Thanksgiving turkey fest (sorry to mention them so early), with ragùs, meatballs and sausages and no less so with pizza or ratatouille. 13%.
